NEWS

at our house with heidi

Heidi brightens any day with her infectious smile, positive attitude and genuine joie de vivre - and is one of our longest standing and most trusted Activity Facilitators for School Camps, Corporate Team Building and, of course, School Holidays Day Camps.

But that’s not all this multi–talented gem gets up to, let's find out what else keeps her busy...

Q: Firstly, tell us what you love about working at Woodhouse?

One of my favourite things about working at Woodhouse is the fantastic people I get to work with, who make every day fun. There’s never a dull moment here - I love being outdoors and doing hands on activities all day, especially because the property is beautiful year-round! I am also really passionate about working with kids and creating opportunities for them to reconnect with nature, develop practical skills, and just be kids. I always feel lucky to be able to say that I genuinely love my job.

Q: What fills your days when you’re not at Woodhouse?

I’ve just finished my fourth year of a Bachelor of Arts / Masters of Teaching, specialising in primary teaching. Next year I’m going into a Masters of Teaching to broaden my skills before I head out to teach in a classroom. My favourite part of the degree is the student teaching placements, where I get to apply all of the theoretical knowledge, and help students achieve that “aha” moment when something finally clicks.

Q: Tell us about your involvement in Scouting?

I’ve been involved in Scouts since I was 12, and am currently a Rover. Rovers is the oldest youth section of Scouts, for 18-26 year olds. Some of the highlights from my time in Scouts have been hiking in the Grampians, flying a glider plane, and all of the friends I’ve made - half of which I now happen to work at Woodhouse with!

Oh - I also volunteer as a Cub Scout Leader. It’s so rewarding to help the kids develop confidence and leadership skills through the different activities we do.

Q: So, when you’re not at Woodhouse, on placement, completing assignments, at Uni or volunteering, what do you do to relax?

You’ll find me painting, roller skating or doing something outdoors - I’m happiest when I’m active or learning something new! I love to paint on unconventional canvasses like shoes and jackets, and to keep a sketchbook of my travels and things I see out and about. I love outback camping and hiking, and have been to some spectacular parts of Australia. One of my favourite experiences was hiking for two full weeks in Tasmania through the snow. Recently, I've also gotten into indoor rock climbing, with a couple of mates from Woodhouse.

Pre-Christmas Day Camps are fully booked out… but if Heidi sounds like the type of person you want your 5-13 year old to hang out with these holidays, there is still space remaining in the January sessions.

Clever parents are doubling it as a Christmas gift – look out for the print-at-home gift notification in the confirmation email!

As we emerge from such uncertainty and social disconnection, we know how important camping and outdoor experiences are to people's mental and physical health and are thrilled to announce that we are open for day adventurescamping and weekend family getaways in our chalets!

In fact, we believe that being outdoors on a 54 hectare property, breathing in the fresh country air and being active is a pretty great place for your family group to be right now, providing our public health and safety expectations are followed.

We’re also taking additional precautions including sanitising discs for  Disc Golf, Tubes for Tube Sliding and orienteering maps after each use, elements on Challenge Hill and in The Labyrinth are being regularly disinfected – and you can wander down our Wetlands trail, go on the Woodhouse Scavenger Hunt... or simply explore the property in all its Autumn glory without a need to touch anything.

We’re thrilled to announce the winner of our inaugural Woodhouse Badge Competition. The brief was to design a badge that shows what you love most about Woodhouse…

Megan R. (age 12) from Hope Valley Scout Group has seen her design come to life, showing her love of orienteering, Tube Slides and wildlife at Woodhouse… and has won a $150 Woodhouse voucher for both herself and her Scout group! Congratulations and thank you!

Woodhouse is at the Australian Primary Principals' Association National Conference from 3-5 September with our ‘School Camp’ hat on.
We’re passionate about creating equity in a child’s critical developmental years and believe that every child deserves to have a fun School Camp experience at a price that parents can afford.

In a safe environment, we see growth in areas such as self-confidence, independence, resilience and social awareness while exploring and learning new skills.

Check out the flash flood we had in Cox's Creek at the bottom of Challenge Hill that completely covered over the bridge, the Wade & Climb and the Rope Swing Crossing obstacles. It was pretty crazy and happened within the space of about 15 minutes. Then, by the next morning - right back to normal! Thankfully no major damage was caused and the obstacles were ready for action in time for the weekend.
