Campfire season is now open through until mid-late November!

WOODHOUSE GUIDE TO CAMPFIRES

Campfires are a  beloved part of overnight stays and day adventures at Woodhouse. Campers come from near and far to gather around, roast marshmallows, and swap stories after a day of fun.

Whether you're a seasoned camper or new to the outdoor scene, campfires are central to the unique experience of camping at Woodhouse. To help you get the most out of your campfire experience and stay safe, we've put together the Woodhouse Guide to Campfires. Enjoy!

Campfire Safety and Regulations

1. Designated Fire Areas

At Woodhouse, we’ve set up specific spots just for campfires to keep things safe and fun. When you check-in, our friendly team will show you exactly where these areas are on the map. These designated spots help prevent fires from spreading and ensure everyone has a great time without any mishaps.

2. Fire Restrictions

Fire restrictions can vary depending on the weather and fire risk level, so it’s always a good idea to stay informed. Before you light up, check the current fire danger status and follow any advisories or bans. We’re committed to your safety and protecting our beautiful environment, so let’s work together to keep things safe!

Check out the CFS Website for the latest information!

3. Safety Gear

Make sure you’re equipped with the right safety gear for your campfire adventure. A responsible adult must be in attendance at all times with water on hand - a large bucket filled with water is the minimum requirement, and you could also consider a fire blanket and a shovel. This is crucial for managing any unexpected flare-ups. We also recommend wearing long pants around a fire and tying back long hair, in case of sparks. Also, be sure to wear enclosed shoes around the fire to protect your feet from hot embers and coals.

How to Safely Enjoy Your Campfire

For the safety of all guests, safety requirements must be met - please refer to the printed Guest Information brochure provided at check-in.

1. Building Your Fire

Set up your campfire in one of our purpose-built pits or drums. Ensure there’s a clear space of 4 meters around and above your fire, and keep tents, buildings, or gas bottles at least 10 meters away. We have large pits available for shared use—perfect for meeting fellow campers—or opt for a cozy half-barrel drum if you prefer a more intimate setting. Feel free to bring your own portable fire drum, as long as it has legs and a plate underneath to keep it off the ground.

2. Firewood Guidelines

You can buy firewood and fire starter kits from Woodhouse, or bring your own (just make sure it’s free from paint or chemicals). Kids can help gather kindling and dry leaves from the ground, but remind them not to pick from plants or shrubs.

3. Extinguishing Your Fire

When it’s time to put out your fire, make sure it’s fully extinguished. Pour water over the embers, stir the ashes with a stick, and add more water until everything is cool to touch. Never leave a fire unattended unless you’re absolutely sure it’s completely out.

Campfire Etiquette

1. Respect Fellow Campers

Keep the noise levels down, especially during quiet hours, and be mindful of others’ space. A little respect goes a long way in maintaining a pleasant atmosphere for everyone.

2. Leave No Trace

After your campfire, clean up all debris, including food scraps and trash. Leave the area just as you found it—or even better! Your efforts help ensure that everyone can enjoy the campfire experience.

Fun Campfire Activities

Now for the best part: making the most of your campfire experience!

1. Storytelling and Songs

Gather around the fire for some classic storytelling or a sing-along. There’s nothing quite like sharing stories and songs with family and friends as the sun sets. Need inspiration? Check out our list of campfire songs to get started!

2. Campfire Cooking

Experiment with cooking over the fire! From roasting marshmallows to creating delicious foil packet meals, the possibilities are endless. Start with the classic s’mores—ingredients are available at reception—and let your taste buds enjoy the adventure.

3. Stargazing

Once the flames have died down and the coals are cooling, take a moment to lie back and enjoy the night sky. See how many constellations you can spot and relish the starry brilliance, far from city lights.

Enjoy your campfire adventure at Woodhouse!
